Norwood in Bergen County
takes its name from the old description of “North-Woods.”
The borough formed when it broke from Harrington Township in
1905. Dutch families settled on the land originally comprising
Norwood in the late 17th century, when Lenni Lenape Native Americans
lived in the area.
Today, Norwood continues to offer natural beauty, with the additions
of an excellent school system, family activities and diversity.
Nearly 13% of borough residents identified themselves as being
of Korean ancestry in the 2000 U.S. Census, the sixth highest
percentage in any New Jersey municipality.

Norwood Schools:
The Norwood Public School serves students in kindergarten through
eighth grade. High school students attend the well-regarded
Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan. A private
Catholic school, Holy Family, serves students in grades pre-K
through eight.

Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan has received
the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States
Department of Education, the highest award an American school
can receive. It was ranked 18th among public high schools in
the state out of 316 schools surveyed in 2008 by New Jersey
Monthly magazine. The school offers top-ranked sports teams
for boys and girls, and a nationally known music program with
a competitive wind symphony and an acclaimed string ensemble.

Norwood Cultural and
Recreational Resources:
Norwood offers a range of sports such as Little League, football,
soccer, softball, basketball, and swimming at facilities including
three local parks, three athletic fields, and one private swimming
pool for town members. Summer programs for children also are
available.
The Norwood Public Library is a member of the Bergen County
Cooperative Library System. It offers 30,000 books, many DVDs
and other media for borrowing, as well as activities and events
to educate and entertain the local community.
The Closter Nature Center offers an oasis of woods and water
in the middle of town. Ponds, brooks, meadows, and forests are
available to explore, and educational and environmental programs
are offered, along with a summer program for young people.
The nearby Demarest Nature Center offers trails and brooks to

The Old Church Cultural Center of Demarest is housed in the
building that was the first community’s first church built
in 1874. The OCCC includes the Art School and Center Gallery
at Old Church. The art school offers courses in arts and crafts
from beginner level to advanced professionals.
The prestigious Bergen Performing Arts Center (bergenPAC) in
Englewood is a performing arts center that attracts over 300,000
visitors each year with world-class names in ballet and jazz,
and popular acts as Rick Springfield, the Beach Boys, B.B. King,
Joan Rivers, STYX, George Benson, Alice Cooper, and The Bacon
Brothers.
Norwood Transportation
and Commute:
New Jersey Transit bus lines run from Norwood to the Port Authority
Bus Terminal in Manhattan, taking an average of 40 minutes per
trip.
There is no train service between Norwood and Manhattan.
The New York Metropolitan region’s three major airports
- Newark Liberty International, JFK International, and La Guardia
Airport – can be reached by car in less than one hour.

In Paramus north of Route 4, shoppers find three miles of road
lined with more than one hundred retails stores and several
large shopping malls.
The state’s largest shopping mall, Westfield Garden State
Plaza in Paramus, is one of five major shopping malls in Bergen
County.
Norwood is close to the border with Rockland County, New York,
which makes it easy to shop on Sunday. Bergen County shopping
is restricted on Sundays because of blue laws, which prohibit
the sale of clothing, furniture and electronic appliances and
leave most retail stores, except for those offering basics like
gas, groceries and restaurants, closed on Sundays.
