Harrington Park is a quaint residential town formed in 1094 from parts of Harrington Township, Washington Township and the Borough of Closter. It is known for outstanding schools and a strong community spirit that reveals itself in abundant volunteer services and recreational activities for residents. Shopping is limited, with most resident traveling to nearby towns like Cresskill and Closter for retail needs.

Harrington Park Schools:

Harrington Park public schools serve students in grades kindergarten through eight. High school students attend Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan.

Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan has received the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education, the highest award an American school can receive. It was ranked 18th among public high schools in the state out of 316 schools surveyed in 2008 by New Jersey Monthly magazine. The school offers top-ranked sports teams for boys and girls, and a nationally known music program with a competitive wind symphony and an acclaimed string ensemble.

Harrington Park Transportation and Commute:

New Jersey Transit and private bus services provide transportation between Harrington Park and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan.

Train service from New Jersey Transit runs from nearby Westwood and Hillsdale to Midtown Manhattan, taking about 60 minutes. MTA Metro-North Railroad service can be found across the Tappan Zee Bridge from Harrington Park in Tarrytown, New York.

The New York Metropolitan area’s three major airports – Newark Liberty International, JFK International and La Guardia Airport, can be reached in under 45 minutes by car.

Ferry riders can reach 39th Street in Manhattan from a departure point in Edgewater. The ride takes about 15 minutes.

Seasonal sports include baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, tennis, fishing, and ice skating. The commission also presents special activities such as the annual town picnic and the fishing contest in May.

The volunteer-run Harrington Park Swim Club provides recreational, instructional and competitive swimming and diving opportunities to members and their families of all ages from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day. A volleyball court, playground, ping pong tables and locker/shower facilities also are available.

Club 60 welcomes all senior citizens to meet the second Friday of every month except July and August. Trips are organized throughout the year.

The Harrington Park Public Library, which is part of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System, offers books for borrowers, as well as educational and cultural activities to promote life-long learning for residents.

Friends of the Library, which meets the second Monday of every month, focuses on fundraising for the Harrington Park Public Library, particularly for children’s programs that cannot be fully supported through the regular opening budget.

The all-volunteer Ambulance Corps, made of trained Harrington Park residents, provides round-the-clock emergency service to residents and visitors.

The Garden Club, which meets monthly, concentrates on town beautification and special projects, with lectures, demonstrations, floral competitions, and a town-wide holiday decorating contest.

The Home and School Association is an alliance of parents and teachers that promotes the all-around welfare of children through the optimal use of school facilities, achieved by fundraising activities that support cultural events and other enrichment programs for youngsters.

The Junior Women’s Club provides fundraising and social efforts that improve life in Harrington Park by offering opportunities to help people in need.

Harrington Park Entertainment:
Some dining is available in Harrington Park, with options that include family style restaurants and American cuisine. For more options, residents travel to Cresskill to find a mix of fine dining, casual eateries, cafes, and bars. In Closter, another nearby town, residents find a wide array of restaurants with Japanese, Korean and Italian food among the many offerings in a variety of settings.

Many Harrington Park residents also shop in Closter, where stores for everyday needs like supermarkets and auto shops mingle with specialized boutiques in the central business district.
