Englewood derives its name
from having been the first primarily English-speaking settlement
on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River after England annexed
the area known as New Netherland in the mid-seventeenth century.
The name became common for many other settlements in North America
during the early years of the United States.

The Academies at Englewood is a magnet public high school established in 2002
that offers five academies for students of exceptional merit. The five focuses

Englewood high school students also may apply on a competitive basis to attend
the public Bergen County Technical High Schools in Teterboro and Paramus and
Bergen County Academies in Hackensack. The latter includes seven magnet high
school programs, each featuring a different career focus. Businessweek magazine
has rated Bergen County Academies as the best high school in New Jersey.

center in downtown Englewood that attracts over 300,000 visitors each year with
world-class names in ballet and jazz, and popular acts as Rick Springfield, the
Beach Boys, B.B. King, Joan Rivers, STYX, George Benson, Alice Cooper, and The
Bacon Brothers.
The Englewood Library, part of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System,
offers acces to thousands of books, DVDs and other media, with educational, art
and culture events.
The Englewood Department of Parks and Recreation operates and maintains more
than 10 public parks, with activities that include the Tyron Avenue Pool and
Little League, which is run by parent volunteers and sponsored by local businesses.
Flat Rock Brook Nature Center, a 150-acre preserve and environmental education
center on the western slope of the Palisades in Englewood, New Jersey, contains
what remains of the Palisades Forest. This natural woodland preserve is managed
by the nonprofit Flat Rock Brook Nature Association.
The Bergen Family Center, founded by the Woman’s Club of Englewood in 1898,
is the oldest continuously operating family service agency in Bergen County.

Englewood Transportation and Commute:
Englewood is conveniently located in Northern New Jersey with automobile access
to Route 4, Route 93, Interstate 95, County Route 501, and County Route 505.
New Jersey Transit and private bus lines run from Englewood to the Port Authority
Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, and to the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal.
Local service to other towns in Bergen County also is available.
There is no train service serving Englewood but plans for a light rail service
are under discussion.
The New York Metropolitan area’s three major airports are within 35-45
minutes by car from Englewood: Newark Liberty International, JFK International,
and La Guardia Airport.

Englewood is the home of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.
The hospital, an affiliate of Mount Sinai School of Medicine,
provides patients with comprehensive world-class care. It offers
state-of-the-art clinical programs and the most advanced medical,
surgical, therapeutic and diagnostic services. The facility is
renowned for bloodless medicine and cardiac and vascular surgery
programs, while acting as a leader in breast care, oncology and
joint-replacement services.
Englewood Entertainment:
Unlike many communities in Bergen County, Englewood offers a high level of activity
in its Downtown shopping and entertainment area. The district includes more than
360 retail stores and delicious restaurants, all of which draw upon the diversity
of Englewood.
More than 1,000,000 square feet of retail space provides room for nationally
known retailers and chains and unique, independent stores in Englewood. The combination
of reliable service and exciting discoveries draws shoppers throughout the New
York Metropolitan region. Offerings are especially strong in women’s upscale
fashion, wedding and home furnishings and improvements. A traditional selection
